Based at Morpeth Whorral Bank Hospital, Robson and Prescott are able to offer state-of-the-art hydrotherapy treatment. This allows us to provide the best possible aftercare and rehabilitation for your pet.
Treadmill hydrotherapy is a way of exercising patients in a reduced weight- bearing, low impact heated environment. Our treadmill uses only fresh water that is completely chemical free and not recycled. The water is heated to a therapeutic 27-29°C. The combination of the warmth and the hydrostatic pressure of the water reduces pain and swelling, promotes muscle relaxation and improves circulation and healing.
Muscle starts to waste within 3 days of any immobilisation so to stop further weakness and prevent injury elsewhere it is necessary to rebuild the muscles that have deteriorated, through controlled exercise. It is better to use heated water as cold water causes the blood vessels to constrict near the skin and to the superficial muscles (those just under the skin). This restricting the flow of blood, making the muscles less efficient.
Hydrotherapy also provides a way of improving an animal’s gait by increasing the range of motion of the joints. It strengthens the muscles for controlled balance as well as improves circulation, Increases tissue healing, maintain fitness levels of the heart and lungs, and helps with weight loss.
Conditions that benefit from Hydrotherapy:
- Pre and post-operative conditioning
- Osteoarthritis-reduce pain and increased mobility
- Hip, elbow and other joint dysplasia
- Degenerative myelopathy
- Spinal injuries
- Cranial cruciate ligament and post-operative recovery
- Muscle Strengthening maintenance and restoration
- Relief of pain, swelling and stiffness
- Relaxation of muscle spasms
- Cardiovascular fitness (heart and lungs)
- Obesity (Weight loss in conjunction with dietary management)
- Mental well being
- Recovering from injuries - fractures, soft tissue and neurological damage
- Fitness and Stamina for working dogs
What to expect - Inital Assesment
The initial appointments will last around one hour. We will discuss the patient case to find out more about your dog’s day to day ability. We start with a health check, then assess gait and take limb measurements as well as weight then finally fitness ability. At first your dog may only use hydrotherapy equipment for a short period of time. Quality of limb placement is more important than quantity. Longer sessions will depend on fitness assessment results. Subsequent appointments will last for approximately 30 minutes.
Every pet is individually assessed and a specific plan is formulated to suit their individual requirements. Records of each session are kept and on-going reports are made, and discussed with your vet as required.
A shower is available to rinse the dogs before and after each session and a powerful air dryer is on hand to dry your pet before they go home!
Our Underwater Treadmill
Dogs gain access to the treadmill using a ramp and once in, the treadmill gradually fills up with warm water (27-29 °C) to the desired height. By initially having the water levels high the dog’s effective weight bearing is reduced to 38% enabling walking exercise but reducing concussive stress on the joints. As the dog improves, the water can be reduced so the dog takes more weight back on the affected area. The treadmill can be set to a speed from as little as 0.5mph up to 8mph and it will be set at the speed that your dog finds most comfortable.
The advantage of the treadmill is that we can see the dog’s movement from all angles and enables the therapist to ensure the dog uses the specific part of the body as it should. The speed and water level can be adjusted depending on the treatment given.
